Facebook has just released new targeting options for those building a Facebook ad campaign. The new option is “Precise Targeting” and offers a new way of putting your ad in front of either a wider or narrower audience, as you choose.

Here’s what Facebook says; What is Precise Interests targeting?

Precise Interest targeting lets you define your ideal audience by what they are interested in, using terms people have shared in their Facebook profiles (timelines). These may be drawn from their listed interests, activities, education and job titles, pages they like or groups to which they belong.

Let’s take a look at how this new feature works and what the difference is between Broad and Precise targeting. Here are some screen shots showing the different audience numbers for each option in the USA;

‘Cooking’ broad interest targeting yields over 17 million people

‘Cooking’ Precise interest targeting yields less, at 7.9 million people

‘Obama’ broad targeting yields over 9 million people

‘Obama’ Precise targeting yields 121,000 people

I was over surfing on bing.com (which is rare, because I typically use google). And I was STUNNED to see this video. Apparently, Bing and Facebook are already teaming-up to work in ways we have not seen before from a search engine.

If I were google, I would be very concerned at how Bing and Facebook are working together on search and social networking, because google would not appear to have an immediate alternative to Facebook. I mean, who would they go to… Twitter?

I don’t think so.

All I can say is 2011 is going to be very interesting. Expect to see some interesting developments as we move forward. One thing is for sure, marketers are going to have to keep a close watch to make sure they are playing with whoever wins the coming battle of titans in the search arena.
